Icebergs. Glaciers. Steep Off-Piste Downhill. The Fourth Annual Chugach Fat Bike Bash 2019 features a little something for everyone from a fun-loving costumed fatty parade to a cross country race that is the only race in the world that takes riders over icebergs and through glaciers. The World Fat Free Downhill Championships are held on steep slopes of the Chugach Range that legendary extreme skiers once pioneered.
Nothing about this fat bike event fits the mold of your standard-issue long-distance sufferfest. We just want to have fun Valdez-style and that means adding some verticality.
Friday and Saturday's events are designed to be exuberant and welcome a diversity of ages, skills and tire widths. We've chosen race routes and venues for their scenic value as much as their challenge, so plan on taking lots of photos and vids. Bring friends, family, silly costumes, good sportsmanship and the ability to laugh at yourself. There will be rules but rules but sticklers who can't lighten up may be ushered to a time-out room.
The Big Deal is second production of the Fat Free World Championship on Thompson Pass. Last year’s course was 1.75 miles long; featured 2520 feet of vertical descent and the winning time was 3:17. This portion of the event is for pro and advanced riders only.
Otherwise, the Bash is a family- and spectator-friendly event and a celebration of fat bike culture and springtime in the mountains. Please join us for a weekend of merriment and wow moments. Bring your skis and snowboards too in case you feel the urge to take a shred break.
