The Valdez area offers excellent rock climbing locations with stunning views. Blueberry Block and Raspberry Rock at Thompson Pass are nearby but difficult to reach. A 2020 Access Fund grant allowed the start of a trail connecting these two sites and Thompson Lake, and which also lays the groundwork for a larger trail system around Blueberry Campground.

This system will link with existing trails at the top of the Pass. The initial phase, called Berry Trail, connects both climbing spots to nearby highway turnouts and Blueberry Campground Road, and it also provides access to several areas on the north side of Thompson Lake, where you can find rainbow trout and Arctic grayling, along with a lovely lakeside meadow.
