Shoup Bay Cabins
Three cozy cabins, nestled between the water and lush boreal forest. A variety of wild species inhabit the area and may make their presence known to you during your stay, including harbor seals, kittiwakes, bears, bats, squirrels, and voles.
Cabin Amenities
A truly rustic experience, please note that there is no running water or electricity, so you will need to bring in all of your supplies and take out any waste that you generate during your stay.
Cabins feature outhouses, kerosene heaters, 2 bunk beds (4 double beds in each cabin), tables, outdoor fire rings, and lovely covered porches to take in all the views.
What to bring
Chemical or other repellents for bears and bugs.
Warm and waterproof layers. The air is often colder on the water and especially in the vicinity of glaciers, and snow can be present well into summer months, especially for cabins in the inner bay.
Personal supplies including bedding and toiletries. Outhouses may not have supplies.
Food and water, plus cooking utensils and dishes.
If you choose to utilize the fire ring, leather gloves are a good idea.
Kerosene for heating stoves if desired. Plan on between 1 - 2 gallons of kerosene per day depending on weather and your own comfort preferences.
Due to our frequently wet climate, you may want to bring your own firewood if desired. If you collect firewood please do not cut live trees and only use dead and downed wood.
Kittiwake Cabin is missing one bunk mattress so please plan accordingly.
Safety
Brown bears and black bears are found throughout the area. Make noise. Carry bear spray. Observe all bear safety protocols.
It is a good idea to bring some satellite-based communications device should your mobile phone’s signal fail in case of an emergency on land.
September through early June can greet guests with unexpectedly cold conditions, including snow on the ground. Cabins are equipped with kerosene stoves, and campers should bring their own fuel if desired. Consider bringing a shovel sufficient for removing snow on paths, cabin steps, and in front of outhouse doors.
Even if you bring all the water you plan to need, we recommend also bringing a water filter in case of emergencies. Freshwater streams are located near each cabin.
Campers hiking in to the inner bay should pack only what they can carry for a 20-minute hike.
Keep your gear in waterproof containers during transport and pack light!

McAllister Cabin is easily accessed - with good anchoring available - near the mouth of Shoup Bay.
Moraine and Kittiwake Cabins are inside the inner bay, commanding views of a kittiwake rookery and Shoup Glacier. Access to these cabins is via either a trail from the outer tidal flat or a narrow and shallow channel. Be aware of tides, experienced in using depth sounders, and confident in your anchoring technique.
NOTE: Due to changes in the tide flats in recent years, boats anchoring or dropping off passengers in this area can't get in very close. Moraine and Kittiwake require a hike to get to them that may include crossing rocks at the water's edge and swamp areas with streams. Boots are recommended, preferably waterproof. Traveling very light is recommended. Moderate fitness needed.
